Life is always more fun when you take the time to enjoy it. My priority has been on raising my son and preparing for the new baby to come this summer. Although I am still drawing, it’s not everyday and most of it is sketches of my little man.
I’ve had to make some sacrifices to have a family and I’d like to think my career is just progressing very slowly rather than not at all. There are women who can do it all, but I choose to stay home with my son, rather than put him in daycare. That means even though I am home most of the time, I have little to no time for building an illustration career.
I will eventually, but I’m loving spending this time with him, watching him grow and learn and change.
Posts are infrequent but I will continue to put my sketches up, and update on all of my inspirations.
I have quite a few creature images that I have done over the years. These are a few of my favourites, they are ink drawings painted with water colours.
I’m also making the little man’s halloween costume today, so when I finish I’ll post up some photo’s of it. : )
Illustration Friday theme ‘swim’.
I’ve been thinking about how quickly my little guy is growing and learning. It amazes me how he learns new things everyday and is getting taller and taller. I still call him my baby but he’s much more of a toddler now, walking, talking and getting into mischief. It feels like just yesterday he was a tiny baby swaddled in my arms, now he’s an active toddler and who knows how he’ll change tomorrow.
My little guy really loves boxes! He likes it best when we push him around in one like its a car, but just relaxing with a snack is pretty good too.
Every once in a while I have a burst of creative energy that inspires me to just draw. It’s not planned and organized and more often than not I just end up doodling. But the other day I drew some things that I really like, and it did start out as a doodle but by the end of the day I had a couple drawings of Aaron that I was happy with.
This time of year always has me reevaluating what I’ve done the year before and what I want to do this year. The boredom of winter makes me restless as well, I feel the need to reorganize my weeks and improve my work situation. As it is I don’t have a dedicated work space, the apartment has been toddler proofed so all of my drawing supplies are kept in our bedroom until I need to use them. The dinning table then turns into my desk, until dinner time when I have to pack it all up again.
I wonder how other parents work from home but still keep the space kid friendly?
Things have been a little hectic around our house so I haven’t done an update in a while.
I’ve been painting, drawing and I learned how to knit and over the next couple days I’ll have photos and info on all of them.
This first image is a mixed media painting, I’ve been playing around with paint, printed paper and drawings on tracing paper and combining them to create an image. The second little painting was going to be for my christmas cards but once again my ideas were bigger than the time I had, so I ended up buying cards to send. I’ll try again next year.
A couple months ago I signed up for a really neat project with arthouse. It’s a really fun idea and I love that it will be available for anyone to look through. The Sketchbook Project would take my sketchbook and hundreds of others on tour across the US as an art show, then have them entered in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library.
This is Hastings he was the man of the house when my best friend and I lived together. He had free reign of the entire apartment but he had a few trails that he would stick too.
Here is a cute little concept drawing for the illustration friday topic ‘linked’. Earth Day was the inspiration for this drawing, I love the bright saturated colours and in this happy little planet everything is connected.
