Life Changes, and Changes again…

Time marches on and I’ve been savoring every moment of it recently.  Haveing  two young children is amazing, exhausting and I love it.  I don’t have much time to myself nor do I have much time to work, as it is I’m having to stop writing this every few minutes to look at what my three year old has made, or help my six month old reach a toy, or once again put together a healthy snack because they are hungry again.

The cliches are however true, and this time goes by so fast.  The last six months since my youngest son was born has gone by faster than I would like and already he is sitting up and trying to crawl.  It’s an amazing time because he is learning so much so fast, and I find it fasinating when he discovers something new.

My three year old is hilarious and makes me laugh all day long, next fall he will be starting kindergarden and I will miss his silly company.  I will at that point have a little more time to work during the days, but I will have to decide whether or not to put his little brother into daycare.  I’ve been staying home during the week for the past three years, and working part-time evenings and weekends.  It had been grueling working late nights and having to wake up early with a hungry toddler, but we made it work.

I would like to change things after this current mat leave.  If I can spend my evenings and weekends making and illustrating instead of working elsewhere I feel like we would have a better quality of life.  It will be more work in the begining but I’ve made a resolution of sorts, to be the change I want to see in my life.

We will be moving this year, although we haven’t decided where we are going yet.  I am determined to bring into fruition my vision of our future.  It’s exciting and daunting since we are in the planning and organizing phase.  I find myself drawing up brainstorm idea pages for five year plans and life goals and going over them with my husband to see which ones jive with him.

So I guess time will tell where this goes and where we will end up.  All I can do is live my life the best way I know how.

Work and Motherhood

Life is always more fun when you take the time to enjoy it. My priority has been on raising my son and preparing for the new baby to come this summer. Although I am still drawing, it’s not everyday and most of it is sketches of my little man.

I’ve had to make some sacrifices to have a family and I’d like to think my career is just progressing very slowly rather than not at all. There are women who can do it all, but I choose to stay home with my son, rather than put him in daycare. That means even though I am home most of the time, I have little to no time for building an illustration career.

I will eventually, but I’m loving spending this time with him, watching him grow and learn and change.

Posts are infrequent but I will continue to put my sketches up, and update on all of my inspirations.

Halloween costume

Costume

Here is the sketch I did after I got the gray hoodie that is the base for the costume.  The little man liked the wolf and the owl drawings, I went through my fabric and found a lot of brown so that was the deciding factor.

Well I love it, lets hope he does too!  Happy Halloween.

I have quite a few creature images that I have done over the years.  These are a few of my favourites, they are ink drawings painted with water colours.

Nap time is often a challenge and now that he’s talking, he lets me know.

The little man inspired this weeks illustration friday topic.  He liked Mr. Potatohead’s moustache so much I made one out of paper for him to wear.

Business Cards and promo block

Children's Book Illustration Promotions, Experimental, In my Brain then on to Paper, Life, On my Desk, Work in Progress

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time working on some new business cards and post cards to mail out this fall.  The biggest slow down was my laptop, after five years the battery started acting up.  I now have my new desktop and things are working a lot better, I really like having a work space in the living room where I can sit with the little man while I work.

I have a couple layouts for my cards that I like but I guess I’m having a hard time deciding on one.

Ideasheet

I took what I liked from these thumbnails to create my business cards.

Cardlayout

This was the front and back I originally liked and started working on, the energy in this first version was lost however when I did some further work on it.

Pencilcropdetail

I like the image, but not for my card.  I guess I’m looking for an image that better defines me as an illustrator.  But really until I get something mailed out it doesn’t matter how well defined my designs are, because the point is to get my name and info to the publishers.  So I really just need to make a decision get them printed and send it out.  period.

Yesterday for Illustration Friday

illustration friday, Ink on Paper, Life, Sketchbook, The Child

I’ve been thinking about how quickly my little guy is growing and learning.  It amazes me how he learns new things everyday and is getting taller and taller.  I still call him my baby but he’s much more of a toddler now, walking, talking and getting into mischief.  It feels like just yesterday he was a tiny baby swaddled in my arms, now he’s an active toddler and who knows how he’ll change tomorrow.

Making Stuff!

Experimental, Life, The Child, Work in Progress

I sometimes get the urge to get crafty, especially after visiting a couple of my favorite sites pintrest and etsy.

Paperboat

I found so many adorable photos of paper mache little boats so I decided to try to make some too.  I started making one little boat then kinda liked the design so I made a bunch more.  I’m going to make some little sails and oars for them next sooo cute!

Then a small monkey wanted to give it a try.  : )

Model Train Museum

Life, The Child

Two weekends ago my husband and I took Aaron to the model train museum here in Toronto.  I expected that the trip would only appeal to the boys but I found these mini towns fascinating.  The detail and amount of work that went into building the scenes I can really appreciate.  It was the last weekend it would be open before they took it all down to rebuild in another location.  The process for re-building is very long and they will not be re-opening for four years.

This miniature set is huge!  It spans the entire basement level of an old factory building.  It has also been around since 1946, so we were so glad we were able to see it before it was taken down.  Have a look at their website it also has a video.
